Once I Ate A Pie

I recently came across a book at school that I just had to share with people here on the blog.  It's written for children, but I think any dog lover will appreciate it.  The book is called Once I Ate A Pie.  There are a variety of breeds included in the book, with poems written about them and beautiful artwork.  My favorite is called "Three" which is written about greyhounds.  Some of the poems are so cute and funny that I found myself laughing out loud. Every one of them made me smile.

The book inspired me to think about some poems for each of the girls.  Each of them have such distinct personalities and quirks that it makes sharing them through words a joy.

The world is my oyster
Full of people just waiting
to pet me
to give me treats
to adore me
to take me places
to love me...

Just for being sweet little me

Let me always be with you
And I'll be infinitely happy

I was born to be the companion of a king
or a queen

But I'm happy to be a companion
to you

Let's just sit here together
for a while

And then later, I'll let you wait on me
hand and foot

Just remember, when you're sad
I'll be the one

To lick away your tears and listen
To all that's on your heart

This is the real reason why you wait on me
And treat me like a queen

I am old
I am not the puppy I once was

But I can still run
In dreams full of endless meadows and rabbits

There are many things I will not do.
I won't go for walks.
I won't listen to the word no.
I won't go back to sleep early in the mornng.
I won't volunteer for rides in the car.

But I will love you
With all my heart.

And I will also always steal from the trash can when I can.
I hope you understand.

I'm not going to win awards for poetry anytime soon, but I thought it would be fun to give each of the girls their own short one.  Hopefully it at least made you smile, and perhaps ponder something about the furry companion you share your own life with.  It's funny where inspiration can strike you.

  1. Isn't writing about your pets fun? I wrote a little memoir about Marge once for school and I thought it was one of my best pieces of writing ever. It's so easy to write with emotion and feeling about the things you love most!

    Have a good weekend!

  5. What very nice poems. Of course, you have exceptional inspiration there with the girls. Inspiration is essential to art, don't you think? They each probably deserve an extra treat for being such a pawsome Muse.

  11. I love the words....the photos are just *so* beautiful. I have poems I have written for some of my dogs. One of them has spread far and wide, about greyhound adoption. 'A Greyhound's Christmas', I see it everywhere. It is a wonderful thing to do, to have these hounds in more ways than one. You do a great thing loving them as you do...not that I ever feel it is *hard* to love these dogs. Beautiful thanks so much for sharing!

  16. Aww, those are great poems showcasing the personality of each of your pups. The last one could well be about Tucker, who has never eaten an entire pie, but has stolen more than one piece off someone's plate.
