"What Do You Carry In Your Back Packs?"

We've been asked a lot lately about what the girls carry in their backpacks since we got them and posted pictures of them.  We also get asked by people when we're out on the trails and they see them.  I'm not exactly sure what people think they might carry in there, but I hope we don't disappoint anyone.  There are no Avon products in there, nor anything that might be turned loose to be chased on the trail.  The girls are still disappointed about that last part.

Right now, we're working on getting Bunny and Morgan used to carrying the packs, so we don't let them carry a lot of weight in them. We want taking the packs to be associated with having a good time.  That means that we're easing into it, because we don't want them to feel too sore or overworked after we've been out with their packs on.  Eventually, we want to work up to them carrying the packs for longer distances, and perhaps with a little more weight, mainly for Morgan.

For now, they carry a canine first aid kit.  I'd hate to be out on a hike and have one of them get hurt and not be able to do something for them.  They also carry their own water bowls and water bottles.  Treats are also included in the packs.  Poop bags are stowed in there, too, since it's pretty much a guarantee that we'll need those.  Both of the girls have ID tags in the bags as well, that have contact information for their vet as well as family members who can be contacted in case of an emergency.  The ID also states that if they are found alone, then something must have happened to us and to please care for them until we can be located.  Hopefully, that will never happen, but I would hate to have them or us need help and not have prepared for it as much as possible.

Hopefully that solves the mystery about what the girls carry in their Wolf Packs!

  2. What a great idea. Like the thought of a note asking them to be looked after until you're found.

  3. Umm, that's a good idea to let them take care of their stuff.

Now, it made me wonder whether our little Princess Eva is strong enough to carry her own water bottle and some snacks though : } Btw, could I let her carry her own bags? She's our royal highness!!!

  4. Thanks for answering my question. Such a good idea to carry first aid and ID info! Maybe Mack and I will see these in our future...but not sure if they will fit on Macks puggy back!

You girls are so stylish with your packs!

  7. Nice way to make the dogs carry their stuff instead of you carrying a giant backpack. If I put a backpack on Princess Jersey she'd probably stage a protest :)

  8. And what else would well-heeled young ladies carry in their backpacks - the contents sound perfectly logical to us.

  9. Isn't "Be prepared" the Greyhound motto? Or do I have that mixed up with something else? Anyway, it looks like your girls will always be ready for anything that comes up.

  10. Well, one does wonder sometimes why you are dressed like beasts of burden on your walkies. That sounds like a good list of things to carry (just make sure mom carries those poop bags once they are full). Imagine if you (gasp) got lost and some kind human opened your backpack and found poop!

  14. I'm shocked that Bunny doesn't have her pack full of her head shots, prepaw-autographed, for all her fans. Maybe I need to check Morgan pack. Make sure Bunny hasn't put the pics in there. -Mr. Taleteller

  15. I has been meaning to ask you if'n peeples is always wanting to know wot is in your pack. I get asked that ALL THE TIME. It's like peeples has never seened a dog with a pack afore but I see them all the times. I dussn't has to carry anything heaby coz I do be old alreddy - that is wot I has an old alreddy mom fur, BOL! But I do carry a roll of poo bags even tho I never poo while hiking. Mom says just in case, you never know, but the roll do still be brandy new after all this time. I carry my collapsibull water bowl - a noo one is on the way since the udder one sprouted a leak. And I pack out the litter wot we finds. When mom tells peeples I pack out litter, they just stare at us like they is not unnerstanding. I wonner wot that is all about. Wot is not to unnerstand? That I be the bigger pawson for cleaning up after the litterbugs?

  18. When we used to backpack, our dogs wore packs. Since they are Labs, they jumped in every water source. We rapidly learned that they needed to carry water bottles, and nothing that could get ruined by water!

I didn't know about the muzzle modifications that are possible to prevent eating stuff through the end of it. I'm going to be searching the web today. Thanks so much.

This is our longest mushroom-muzzle season ever, and it's starting to bother *all* of us!

  22. Sounds like you do have the important things inn the packs now. And you are so right to build the weight up gradually. And an added plus is that the dogs look great wearing their backpacks.

  24. Very smart and sensible. We started having Mr B carry a backpack when we first got him so he could have a "job" and focus on walk and not being afraid in the city. We didn't know what to put in the pack, but then we started stopping by the dog store and making him carry his own groceries home.

  25. When mom was a girl, they used to backpack with their dog. He carried his food, water and bedroll in and our trash out. One time they were crossing a log bridge and he started to slip so grandma grabbed for anything to keep him from falling. Turned out she got his tail and dislocated it. :-( She carried his pack plus hers the rest of the trip because she felt so bad!

  30. Wow...that's a lotta stuff they carry. I'm not sure I'm gonna let mom see this post cuz she might get "ideas," you know. Right now she or dad juggles all of our necessities. And me and Brudder Ranger kinda like it that way. Brudder Ranger calls them our "sherpas." But he says not to tell them that he calls them that.

Pees. OH! Please tell Bunny that mom wouldn't let me roll in the bear poop. (She's kinda mean that way.) And please also let Bunny know that bear poop kinda smells like berries!

  36. What a comprehensive list of items you might need and emergency items. I wonder what else you've got in mind for them to carry? Frankie would lose a back pack. He went into a little patch of bush wearing a harness and collar with his tags on and came out the other end naked!!! Never did find the harness or collar.
