The Big Game Hunter

If you've followed the blog for a while, you might know that Bunny considers herself quite the huntress.  Last year, she believed that the rabbits existed just to torment her.  I had to wonder about it myself when they started hopping out onto the sidewalk in front of her nose.  With the weather finally warming up here, I knew that it wouldn't be long before we started seeing them again.

Today we had our first rabbit sighting of the season.  The funny part was that Bunny and Blueberry were too busy stalking a cat across the street to notice the rabbit.  She really is a sighthound through and through.  I thought that would be the end of our excitement on the walk today, but I was mistaken.  It's funny how often that happens when the greyhounds are involved.

As we neared the end of our walk, Bunny went into her unmistakable hunting mode.  Her ears went up, she began to slink along silently like a coyote and her whole body was on alert.  You might be thinking to yourself that she finally spotted a rabbit or perhaps a squirrel or marauding cat.  However, Bunny had her eyes on much bigger prey this time.

Me:  Bunny, what are you up to?

Bunny:  Shhhhhh!

Me:  Did you just shush me?

Bunny:  This is important!  Be quiet!

Me:  You have got to be kidding me!  There's no way you can take that down!

Bunny:  You greatly underestimate sighthound determination!

Me:  You greatly underestimate the size of that beast!

Bunny:  Curses!  They heard us!  You've foiled my plot!

I suspect that this is the sort of thing that dogs who live in towns and cities rarely encounter on their walks.  I have a feeling that Bunny and Blueberry both are going to have a busy summer trying to figure out how to take one of these down.  In case you were wondering, here's the object of their new fascination.

  2. HA HA HA.... Bunny.... I'd skip that big bunny if I were you.

We walk trails all the time during all the months that are warm enough and many times come across horses. Renner and Scooter no long pay them much mind, but last summer we were on a narrow trail with some horses that were being newly broken in and it was a *scary scary* situation. We stood as far off to the side as possible, and made sure none of us 'looked' at the horses and stayed very still...which was hard. You are just hoping no one gets hurt. Seemed like it went on forever, I was just waiting to get whacked. Both Renner and Scooter did great at behaving though...which was a huge help.

  5. Oh, Bunny. My Angel Donna had horses and believes me, you do NOT want to mess with those beasties. They can be quite contrary. Stick with rabbits or squirrels. Much more satisfying, I promise!

  7. Bunny, you are a great hunter. We so reckon that if we had you with your long legs and us with our noses there would be no stopping us!!
We agree with Frankie Furter right enough - sometimes things can turn nasty so you be careful.

  9. Moving onto better and bigger things. You're past cats and bunnies. That's definitely a sign of maturity. Good luck taking one of those down, as you know, I have tried repeatedly.

  12. Ohhhhhh - Big Dogs. We live beside a ranch and see them some. Queen Natasha always is so fascinated by them, but they will not play with her.

  13. I can certainly understand the fascination Ms. Bunny, but better to err on the side of caution. Give those big beasties all the room they need and stay out of their way. Great photos!

  17. Is Bunny's name based on her love of stalking bunnies??

Dogs and horses... With every new dog, we have to spend a lot of time working on teaching our dogs good horse etiquette. When we first moved to our rural area, K almost got a rider thrown because she went so nutso when she saw a horse on the trails. Now, we enlist our horse-riding friends to help us with each new dog... and they eventually learn to like horses. K has found one who will 'play stick' with her. The horse holds one end while K pulls on the other end. It's pretty funny!

Tell Bunny that I think that she's set her goals too high. Taking down a horse would be a tough job!

  19. Nope, Rugby hasn't ever run into one of those on a walk! I do ride though and he thinks he needs to play with the horses, but I just keep telling him they could squash him very easily!!

I think you can take them Blueberry! Maybe if you and Bunny take it together?

  23. Hi Bunny's mom! I live right in the great big city and I've seen those big horsies here. Usually there's a police officer riding up top, but I've seen them right down by the lake just a little over a mile away. They usually attract a lot of attention from two legged critters (aka humans), so it's not just Bunny who's stalking them!!

  24. I had a very keen girl once who wanted to kill everything, including horses. Made our early walks kind of nerve-wracking! So I know the feeling! LOL!

  25. Hey, believing in yourself is half the battle! Way to go, Bunny!
