Frozen Waterfalls

Bunny here at the keyboard sharing our first adventure of the new year.

Some of you may remember that Morgan and I really wanted to hike back into Saint Louis Canyon in Starved Rock State Park this winter to see the frozen waterfall.  It was one of our big goals for hiking this year.  We'd planned to go on New Year's Day, but Mom and Dad were both sick, so we went on Sunday instead.

I have to say that we chose our timing perfectly.  We had our third snowiest December in history here.  We've had more than seventeen inches of snow total for the month.  Then, on Thursday and Friday it warmed up.  As a matter of fact, Friday it was almost sixty degrees and we had crazy thunderstorms, although we were spared the tornados that they had to the South of us.  All that rain washed the snow right away.  Then on Saturday and Sunday, it got cold and freezing again.

Hiking through the canyon was more treacherous than usual.  Lots of places were solid ice.  Combine that with a cliff off to the side and it did make us proceed with quite a bit of caution.  As a matter of fact, Dad even fell once.  Sorry, no photos of that this time, but one of these days soon, I'll get one.

We were surprised that lots of people decided to hike down the canyon with dogs.  We saw more dogs there than I think we ever have before.  It was pretty cool to see so many people enjoying nature with their pups in the New Year.  Morgan would like it to be known that she was the only dog on the trails with no coat on.

After we hiked and skated our way down the trail, we finally got to the waterfall.  Let me tell you, it was worth all that slipping and sliding!  I am so glad we made it down there.  It was like seeing something from a magical realm.

We even shot a short movie so you could hear what it sounds like as the water falls down the ice.  It's still hard to believe that any sort of violence could happen in such a pristine place.  We really felt like it was a good sign that 2011 will bring all sorts of wonderful and magical experiences.

Dad was so impressed that he thought about taking off work on Monday and going back.  It was just that cool, no pun intended!  So, who else is accomplishing their goals for the new year?

  10. What an amazing frozen waterfall. Well worth the hike.

Morgan is very brave to go coat-less...but I guess GSD's have big strong double coats to cope with the cold.

Sorry to hear your mum and dad were poorly on New Year's Day. Glad to see they are fit and ready to go on more adventures with you again.

    Love and licks Winnie xx

  23. Morgan was the only one without a coat. You tell her that it must be that she was the toughest dog on the trail!

Gorgeous waterfall, really amazing. You did choose a perfect day. Do you ever ponder how moving water freezes? I do every winter. I haven't figured it out yet.

Around here, crazy climbers sabatoge a water pipeline that feeds the city to put a big leak in it. The result is a rush of water down into a canyon - a manmade waterfall. Then those crazy people don ice climbing gear and climb up the waterfall. Absolutely insane. I think that the "authorities" have plugged all the leaks this year but who knows?

I'd say, visit that beauty again!

  24. That waterfall do be furry pawsome and I is rilly digging that last group pikshure of all of you. Your waterfall woz more frozened up than mine woz on Noo Years Day. You knows those tornaders south of you? Where they hitted in Sunset Hills, MO woz 1/2 mile from my gramma's howse! Gramma saw a mattress fly ofur her roof! She sayed it do be way skeery. Anywho, about those claws fur hoomans wot your mom woz checking out... Mom sayed to tell you last year she used Yaktrax. They cost about 1/2 the green papers as Kahtoola Microspikes but the microspikes be WAY better. It woz trooly amazing coz mom ALWAYS falls on her behind and she did not fall one time. Mom woz akshually walking 3 miles per hour on ice - that do be a normal pace. And yes, she has fallened with the Yaktrax on.

  36. We see the humans color coordinated their clothes:)

That was so cool - bet it was a slippery walk though. We had a sort of waterfall outside our yard today. Some silly human worker at the house behind us left the outside faucet running overnight at the very least. Mom heard it flowing down the hill this morning when she let us out. It was dark and she couldn't imagine what it was - once daylight appeared, she could see and trudged over to turn it off. Ciara was disappointed - she almost had a puddle for some mudpies.

  49. So beautiful.

We took a hike to Silver Falls State Park and the ice was amazing. We didn't take any of our dogs because the trail is restricted.

I won't tell them that you got to go, they'd be jealous.
