Late Night Chat With Lilac

Well, to top things off this week with our run of bad luck, Lilac decided that this week would be a good one to start having our late night chats again.  I love a lot of things about her, like how she came over to me yesterday evening when I got home from work and let me know she'd missed me by leaning against me and burying her head against my chest, but her barking out her demands is not one of her most endearing traits.  This is especially true at oh dark thirty in the morning.  Even roosters can't take her schedule.  Lately, she's decided to skip her less demanding pleas for attention, like whining and the cold nose poke in the back and gone straight to demanding barks.

Lilac:  Get up, dammit!

Me:  Wha...?

Lilac:  I said now!

Me:  Do you know what time it is?

Lilac:  I'm a dog.  I don't concern myself with human conventions like time.

Me:  Apparently not.

Lilac:  I'm waiting!

Me:  I have NO idea what you want at this hour!

Lilac:  (pant, pant)  How can you not know?

Me:  Um, because I'm not a dog?

Lilac:  That is obvious!

Me:  Can you not just tell me what you want?

Lilac:  You're supposed to know!

Me:  Well, I don't.  So, just tell me what it is!

Lilac:  I forgot.

Me:  You forgot?!  Then it couldn't have been that important!

Lilac:  I am sure that it was very important, and it's your job to remember it!  I'm old, dammit!

Me:  Actually, I need to get some sleep so I can go to my job and earn money to buy you stuff.  So, I'll talk to you about this later.

Lilac:  Hmph!

So, the next night we decided to try an experiment.  We brought her bed in, fluffed the pillows in the artful way she seems to prefer, and then brought her fan into the bedroom.  The fan was plugged in and aimed right at her highness.  We all had a much better night's sleep.  It's amazing the things we'll do for love, a few hours sleep, or both!

We're particiapting in the Pet Blog Hop again.  If you don't know what it is, it's a good way to gain new readers and find some new blogs that may be of interest to you.  You simply add your name to the blog roll and then copy the code into your html editor and you're on the list!  We'd like to thank Life With Dogs, Confessions of the Plume and Two Little Cavaliers for hosting the blog hop every week.  Feel free to add your own pet-related blog to the list.

  2. With sweet looks like that why can't a girl demand attention in the wee hours?

  3. Well, it probably is about being old. My humans are pretty old and there's lots of getting up and down all night and I don't know if they're sure why either. If none of them went to work I think the hours would be quite irregular around here. Still, Alpha Mom doesn't go along with my idea that 4:30 AM is the pawfect time for rise and shine. She likes to sleep in until almost 6.

    lotsa licks, Lola

  5. At least you`ve dicovered what it is that she seems to want! Maybe your sleep will be less interrupted now? She looks very contented. =)

  6. That's funny! I must admit I like to wake Mama and Papa up at very odd hours, usually when I need a lift up on the bed. I prefer a bark/cough, works every time.

  7. Well, if we told the two leggers EVERYTHING... what would they have to DISCOVER?

  8. WE are fortunate - no barkers here. Ok, so sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night with a crushing pressure in my chest and the inability to breathe - only to find Natasha sitting on my chest and staring at me. But at least she doesn't bark.

  9. Lucky girl! Eva has a fan on her 24/7, but then she's a thick coated sheltie!

  10. Oh, Max is now totally in love with Lilac! A doggie after his own heart - he adores having late night chats and can't understand this 'wait until the morning' philosophy. Schnauzer snuggles - JD and Max.

  11. The personal fan - we know it well. Our late Java Bean had one.

  12. Oh Lilac....well, old dogs needs their rights too :) Maybe if you call the barking a need to check if her family is still alive, you'll feel better about it. ;)

  16. Ahh... a personal fan! Lilac is a smart girl!! BTW - have you ever talked with your vet about melatonin? As Ginger got older, my vet recommended it to help with her sleeping patterns and reduce the onset of senility. (Sounds crazy but we did notice an improvement!)

  17. It's good to catch up with old friends, isn't it? Even if that means having her bark at you in the wee hours of the morning. ;)

  30. Poor Lilac (and everyone else in the house), but I totally understand. It has been too hot and humid of late to sleep comfortably. BTW, hope you didn't get flooded out from the rain that went through tonight.

  32. Dang, I just lost my comment. Our dog S did almost exactly the same vocal demanding, and when he got old, he started it at O dark hundred. Our vet asked us a bunch of questions and thought that an anti-senility drug (anipryl...spelling?) might help. It did help both with the late night chats and some worrisome wandering.

I love Miss Lilac and when you tell us her storie!

BTW, Bee Balm is the same as Horsemint. It must love very specific conditions because it flourishes in huge patches of meadows, and then there's none 50 yards away... I hope that you can grow it!

It's about time mom figured out you were not comfortable! Geez- of course a cool breeze and floofed pillow is what you wanted. Maybe I'll buy an instruction manual for mom.
