Off To School

It seems that three of us here are off to school this week.  Today I go back to work after my five week break, and I go back hopeful that this will be a wonderful and exciting year.  The past two years have been very challenging for me, personally, but I am going back positive, excited about the new students who will be in my class and happy to see the seven who are returning students, as well.  There is a lot of turmoil in my school district right now, and I recently heard that our state just passed California as the worst off financially, so the future could very well be a roller coaster, but for now, I'm putting those worries in a box and going in ready to fall in love with a new class and see what fate has brought to us this year.

I'm not the only one returning to school this year, though!  Mr. Taleteller and Morgan have also started class together.  They are attending obedience class.  Saturday was the first day of school ever for Miss Morgan.  I have a feeling that she may turn out to be a star pupil, but she certainly will have to do her homework.  Already she has learned to sit and wait at the door for me to release her.  That took only a few attempts to learn.  Mr. Taleteller has been less successful in teaching her not to jump on him when he gets home from work, though.  Plus, she still has some leash manners to learn.

I'm also hopeful that taking class together will help cement the bond that Mr. Taleteller really wants to have with Morgan.  She seems drawn to me, and I love her already, but I know that he really wants her to be his dog.  I think there's a chance that she may always be deeply attached to both of us, and that's fine with me.  I've resisted playing with obedience with her because I know how much he wants to do it.  She's such a quick study that she gets things really quickly.  She also has a serious case of the "disease to please" that the Greyhounds consider themselves immune to.  Certainly, the girls like having us be happy with them, but if we ask something of them that they don't want to do, pointy little noses go up in the air and those beautiful eyes look away.  Morgan will do anything to make you happy and she will work for praise, treats or toys.  Going to class will hopefully be an enriching experience for them both!

On this Monday morning, as I drag myself out of bed early, I'm happy to have a job and to be going back to it, but I think I'd rather be going to the other class!  Please be patient with us while we get used to the swing of a new school year and try to keep up visits to our friends' blogs.  We may be late, but we'll get there eventually!

  1. Greyhounds certainly do have their attitudes! We make the dogs wait a few moments after we put out their food before they begin eating. While Larry waits, he stares up at us so that he won't miss the cue. Eagle stares out into space and isn't in a hurry to get started. Sometimes she just turns her nose at the bowl and walks away. If she misses breakfast, she always is good about eating dinner. Good luck to all of you at school!

  2. Hi - oh, if you DO find a way to get through to Morgan about the 'not jumping up after getting in from work' please share! JD is an absolute sweetie and is so good natured, waiting until we are ready to fuss him. Max STILL gets hysterical and being firm or ignoring him just doesn't seem to have any effect. We're always amazed that they're not only the same breed and the same age but from the SAME LITTER, they are so different!!

Good luck for the next year - we have a feeling it's going to be a great year and we love your pawsitive attitude!

  3. I`m sure Morgan will be a honor roll student in no time! Good luck with the new charges as well. As I`ve said numerous times it takes a special person to be a teacher.

  6. Good luck in your new school year. I can't figure out how school years go these days. Ours is out until September. Morgan will do great in obedience class. It should be an excellent bonding experience for Mr. Taleteller and Morgan, too. Good luck with everything! You have a lot going on.

  7. Absolutely love the description of the eyes sliding away and noses going in the air when the greyhounds don't want to listen to a command :)

  10. Good luck returning to work! I know the IL schools are in sad shape. Several friends (who are teachers) were fired at the end of last year.

Hope obedience training goes well. And yes, I have known a few shepherds in my day, and they do seem to have a case of "the disease to please".

    Your pal, Pip

P.S.: Bunny - I had no idea you had a therapeutic background (your comments on my post last night) Perhaps, we could work out some kind of arrangement? I am low on cash, but can pay in fancy dog treats?

  13. We send you good wishes for a great school year. Mom says she understands how both exciting and anxious the opening days can be. Here's to a wonderful class!!!

That will be a great bonding experience for Morgan and Dad. Mom says to let Dad do the feeding too, that seems to have a big impact on us:)

  14. Wow, your school district has an odd schedule. Seems very early to be heading back to school.

I hope that Mr. Taleteller and Morgan have FUN together. I think that GSDs are like Labs in the wanting to please category, except that I think that GSDs have better self control. Labs want to please but often can't control their exuberance!

I remember when our R joined our pack and seemed very drawn to me but my husband wanted R to be more "his" dog. I think that the one-on-one time that they spent together finally sealed the deal. I bet the same will be true for Mr. Taleteller.

  17. Glad you appreciated Rusty's school bus adventure today. And, yes, of course, he is always the class clown.

I did have to laugh at your description of the greys response to a command they don't like. Trust me, that is Sibe through and through. I have actually had debates with them - especially Natasha - where I speak and she responds with a woo. I am sure an onlooker thinks I have lost my mind.

  21. As someone who has had German Shepherd Dogs in her life since 1980 I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt that you are in for the experience of your life. The love and loyalty and devotion and intelligence and keen understanding will literally stun you at times. God bless you for taking this girl and for loving her. She is going to return the love a million times over - I promise☺
